I get excited by little things, like today being the start of October. It's my absolute favorite month of the year. There’s the inevitable cool down, and the changing of the colors on leaves is something that has always fascinated me. The festivals are amazing, and the sounds coming from the haunted house charity drive across the street are cool. The food and drink are different, and it’s just a completely different vibe. The decorations go up - from corn stalks and pumpkins to even the Halloween stuff. It's just different - a more relaxing type of time for me. And funny part is this month we get two full moons - one tonight, the other on Halloween. If last night was any indication, it's gonna be cool.
I had hoped that in this crazy
year that at least Autumn could be some form of normalcy. To smell the clean air, feel the crispness of
it. To enjoy the season for what it is. But what I say doesn’t do it
justice. Here is a poem from Pearl
Sorrels, “It must be October.”
"The harvest moon hangs round and
high
It dodges clouds high in the sky,
The stars wink down their love and mirth
The Autumn season is giving birth.
Oh, it must be October
The leaves of red bright gold and brown,
To Mother Earth come tumbling down,
The breezy nights the ghostly sights,
The eerie spooky far off sounds
Are signs that it's October.
The pumpkins yellow,. big and round
Are carried by costumed clumsy clowns
It's Halloween - let's celebrate."
- Pearl N. Sorrels, It Must be October
So as we go from the high 90 temps and begin that gradual cool down, let’s all hope that we can take a moment to enjoy the peace of the month. For me, driving up into the mountains for some foliage and takings some pictures is on the docket. Slamming down anything Apple is always nice, and continuing to grill (especially with the cooler weather) never sucks. We’ve been notified that we can go back to bowling now, so leagues start next week.
With all this positivity, I have to go back and remember how bad it is for so many others. Fires, COVID, and all the other issues, problems and challenges we all have. My best wishes and hopes to those currently suffering in Napa, Sonoma, and Lake Counties. And worse yet, it’s damn political season. Oh boy.
Anywho, have a day, and if you can, get out and smell the roses.
As Carl Weathers says “Be Peace.”
