This might be the end of Labor Day and the marketers "unofficial end of Summer," but don't tell that to us where it was 110 today and 112 tomorrow - and we're in NORTHERN California with fires raging everywhere.
Labor Day, and you know what? I don’t think we celebrate it enough. I don’t think we honor those who put forth the work that makes this world go round. I recently came across a poem from Walt Whitman and it kinda made sense:
I Hear America Singing
I hear America Singing,
The varied carols I hear,
Those of mechanics, each one
Singing his as it should be blithe and
strong,
The carpenter singing his as he
Measures his plank or beam,
The mason singing his as he
Makes ready for work, or leaves off work
The boatman singing what
Belongs to him in his boat,
The deckhand singing on the steamboat
deck,
The shoemaker singing as he sits
On his bench, the hatter singing as he
stands,
The wood-cutters song,
The ploughboys on his way in the morning,
Or at noon intermission or at sundown,
The delicious singing of the mother,
Or of the young wife at work,
Or of the girl sewing or washing,
Each singing what belongs to
Him or her and to none else,
The day what belongs to the day,
At night the party of young fellows,
Robust, friends,
Singing with open mouths their
Strong, melodious songs.
Thank you to those who do the work. The plumber, the A/C and Heater guy, the pool man, the government worker at DMV or at the Tax Revenue who are overwhelmed and dealing with angry folks constantly. Worse, those poor souls working in retail – who get treated like shit, both by customers and more offensively by the freaking corporate. Memo to those who work in retail, I'm reminded of a line from Father Mulcahy in MASH "When it's your time and purgatory comes calling, you can say 'no thanks, I've already done mine.".
I want to give a special thanks to the firefighters who are battling some serious shit out here. It's insane and we have ash flying everywhere and we're over 100 miles from the nearest fire.
Oh yeah - back to Labor Day, EFF the politicians, the lackeys, the hangers-on, and the
media. Eff Hollyweird, and the Rotten
Apple too.
MLB. Last week it was Tom Seaver. This week, it’s Lou Brock. Baseball stars from the era I grew up in are leaving us, and it’s sad. RIP to both.
NFL. I’m sitting here
watching bits and pieces of this debacle that was turned into a one hour show
regarding the Washington, DC franchise.
Good Lord, I want to believe that
this isn’t true, but there’s just too much smoke here. How in 2020 is this happening? This is OUTRAGEOUS and the NFL needs to come
down hard on Dan Snyder and suspend him during this investigation.
Adrian Peterson to Detroit? One year, One Million Dollars makes sense,
but what will he bring to Mo-town? Just spitballing here, but couldn’t Kansas
City have done that deal too? Yo Adrian, don't screw Minny over by running wild on their ass.
Clowney to Tennessee seems to
make sense. I can’t call it, but I’m not
sure why Tennessee isn’t getting more hype.
Finally, this will be the first
season that I haven’t done Fantasy Football in a very long time. How can you play it when you really don’t
know what is going on?
NBA. So let me get
this straight, WITH the Greek Freak, Milwaukees drops three straight to
Miami. When he gets hurt in Game Four,
the Bucks win? Meanwhile, Houston and
Denver got their obligatory wins over the two LA Superteams, so there will be
now sweeps.
NHL. New York and
Tampa, Dallas and Vega$. Meh. I really wanted Vancouver and Colorado in.
Final Thought. This weekend, I had the distinct pleasure of passing out poppies in my community here and as always we are well received. I thank all of those whose stopped by to say hello, and to those who donated. We look forward to taking care of our veterans with all your help.
Like Jerry said "Take care of yourself, and each other." Peace.
