What is Summer? Do you like it and if so why? Here’s a poem to think about.
Summer oh Summer
Bianca Mckay
Look outside your window
The sun is calling you to come out and play
The pool tempting you to jump in
The air warning you that if you don’t go out you’ll regret it
Summer oh summer oh summer
Look outside your window
The sun in the sky, filling you with glee
Joyfulness of breathing in open air
The warmth making you feel like you want to run and be wild
Summer oh summer oh summer
Look outside your window
Doesn’t the hotness make you want to do something?
Doesn’t the heat make you want to jump in that pool?
Doesn’t summer make you want to have a blast, be wild, be happy?
Summer oh summer oh summer
Soooo… what does Summer make you want to do? To jump in the pool. To slam a cool beverage – to make a cool beverage. To get behind the grill and try new things (Brazilian is the rage now). To road trip to the mountains or to the ocean, or in our case to the desert. To camp. To cook. To fish. To have one hell of a party? To watch the fading sunset from a ridge and take pictures. In better years, to take in a Baseball game, or if you're like me when I was a kid, just sit look up at the sky and dream...Yeah, that’s Summer in my mind.
But as I grow in years, I find a renewed enjoyment of Summer – to watch my Grandchildren and their cousins enjoy it
all – the sheer joy on their faces to experience these new things in their very
young lives. To watch them slam down some Burgers and dogs. To run in the grass. To learn to swim - to ride bikes. To see their smiles. It means so much.
But I want to take you back to our time as kids. No internet, no cell phone, not much other than our friends and our imagination to keep us occupied - and if we as kids were lucky our parents took us for a road trip/vacation.
Which brings me to the video below. One of the lucky things I got to do as a kid was visit the Great Smoky Mountains. Many of us either did this or heard about it, but catching fireflies in a jar was something that existed - heck it was just fun to see one even if you didn't catch them. Well, it seems that even though this video was from six years ago, here people still enjoy a summer night with them…
Final Thought. Summer is a time that we all can enjoy. It is unfortunate in this day and age that kids grow up so fast and miss out on so much like a fun Summer spent mostly outside with no consideration to video games or phones. Between technology and now this horrific 2020, it just seems to me that kids are getting robbed of a slice of their childhood – and that’s a shame, especially since their window to enjoy it is considerably shortened compared to ours. Let them have that precious few years to get outside, and may the get to enjoy Summer in 2021.
